Grams and tablespoons: the basics

Why the conversion is not a single number, and how to get the right one.

How many grams to tablespoons?

It depends on the ingredient. One US tablespoon holds 14.8 ml, and that volume weighs 12.5 g as granulated sugar, 7.5 g as all-purpose flour, 14.2 g as butter, and 21.3 g as honey. Grams measure weight and tablespoons measure volume, so density is the missing link between them.

How many tablespoons are in 1 gram?

About 0.08 tablespoons of granulated sugar, or 0.13 of all-purpose flour. One gram is roughly a quarter teaspoon of sugar — small enough that a tablespoon is the wrong tool for the job.

Is a tablespoon 15 grams?

Only for water. A metric tablespoon holds 15 ml and 15 ml of water weighs 15 g, which is where the rule of thumb comes from. For sugar it is 12.5 g, for flour 7.5 g, and for honey 21.3 g. This single assumption causes more conversion errors than anything else in baking.

Should a tablespoon be level or heaped?

Level, unless the recipe says otherwise. Every value on this site assumes a spoon filled and then scraped flat with a straight edge. A heaped tablespoon holds roughly 1.5 to 2 times as much, which is far too variable to convert.

How do I convert grams to tablespoons without a scale?

Use the calculator: enter the gram figure, select your ingredient, and measure out the tablespoons it returns using level spoonfuls. Level each one with the back of a knife — heaping is where the error creeps in.

Why do different websites give different values?

Because they measure differently. Whether flour is spooned or scooped, cocoa sifted, and brown sugar packed changes the weight by 10–50%. Sites that publish a number without stating the method are the ones that disagree most.

How do I convert mg to tablespoons?

You almost certainly mean grams. A milligram is one thousandth of a gram, so 1 mg of sugar is a few dozen crystals — invisible in a spoon. Divide milligrams by 1,000 to get grams first.

Is "grams to spoons" the same as grams to tablespoons?

Almost always, yes. "Spoons" in a recipe search means tablespoons by default. If a recipe means teaspoons it will normally write tsp, because the threefold difference matters.

Sugar conversions

Granulated, brown, powdered and caster — four different densities.

How many grams of sugar to a tablespoon?

One level US tablespoon holds 12.5 grams of granulated sugar. Packed brown sugar is 13.75 g, powdered sugar 7.5 g, and caster sugar 14.06 g.

How many grams to a tablespoon of sugar?

12.5 grams for granulated sugar. Going the other way, divide grams by 12.5: 100 g is 8 tablespoons, and 25 g is 2 tablespoons.

How many grams of sugar are in a teaspoon?

About 4.17 grams of granulated sugar, which is where the familiar nutrition-label shorthand of "4 grams per teaspoon" comes from.

How many tablespoons is 50 grams of sugar?

Exactly 4 tablespoons of granulated sugar, which is also ¼ cup. Brown sugar gives 3.6 packed tablespoons, and powdered sugar 6.7.

Is brown sugar heavier than white sugar?

Yes, when packed. The molasses coating lets brown sugar crystals compress, giving 13.75 g per tablespoon against granulated sugar's 12.5 g.

How many grams is a tablespoon of icing sugar?

7.5 grams sifted. Icing sugar, powdered sugar and confectioners' sugar are the same product under different regional names.

How many grams is ½ cup of sugar?

100 grams of granulated sugar. Powdered sugar is 60 g and packed brown sugar 110 g for the same half cup.

How many grams is ⅓ cup of sugar?

About 66.7 grams of granulated sugar, normally rounded to 67 g. That is also 5⅓ tablespoons.

How many grams is ¾ cup of granulated sugar?

150 grams, which is also 12 tablespoons.

How many grams is 1 cup of sugar?

200 grams of granulated sugar. Packed brown sugar is 220 g and sifted powdered sugar 120 g.

Flour conversions

The hardest ingredient to measure by volume, and why.

How many grams is 1 cup of flour?

120 grams of all-purpose flour, spooned into the cup and levelled. Scooped straight from the bag it can reach 145 g, a 20% overshoot.

How many grams is 1½ cups of flour?

180 grams of all-purpose flour, spooned and levelled.

How many grams is 2½ cups of flour?

300 grams of all-purpose flour. At this volume a small per-cup measuring error compounds significantly.

How many grams is ¼ cup of flour?

30 grams of all-purpose flour, which is also 4 tablespoons.

Why is flour so hard to measure by volume?

Because flour compresses. It settles in the bag, compacts when you scoop, and traps air when you sift. The same cup can hold anywhere from 100 g to 145 g depending purely on handling — which is why serious bakers weigh it.

How much difference does sifting flour make?

Up to 20% by weight. Sifting adds air, so a cup of sifted flour weighs less than a cup of unsifted. "1 cup sifted flour" means sift first, then measure; "1 cup flour, sifted" means the opposite.

How many grams is a tablespoon of flour?

7.5 grams of all-purpose flour, spooned and levelled — exactly 1/16 of the 120 g cup figure.

Do bread flour and cake flour weigh the same?

No. Bread flour is 127 g per cup, all-purpose 120 g, and sifted cake flour 114 g. Swapping them by volume changes the flour weight by over 10%.

Butter and fats

Sticks, cups, tablespoons and grams — all describing the same block.

How many grams is a tablespoon of butter?

About 14.19 grams. A US stick is 8 tablespoons, ½ cup, 113 g, or 4 oz — four ways of writing the same quantity.

How many tablespoons is 50 grams of butter?

About 3.5 tablespoons, which is a little under half a US stick.

How many grams is ¼ cup of butter?

About 57 grams — half a US stick, or 4 tablespoons.

How many grams is 1½ cups of butter?

About 340 grams, or three US sticks.

How many tablespoons are in a stick of butter?

8 tablespoons, which is ½ cup or 113 g. Most US butter wrappers are printed with tablespoon markings so you can cut straight through.

Does melted butter weigh the same as solid butter?

The same weight, yes — melting does not change mass. But a cup of melted butter and a cup of solid butter are not interchangeable in a recipe, because solid butter measured by volume traps air and the melted version does not.

Cups and fractions

Converting ⅓, ½ and ⅔ cups without guessing.

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

Exactly 16 in a US cup, for every ingredient, because both units measure volume.

How many tablespoons are in ⅓ cup?

5⅓ tablespoons. Measure it as 5 level tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon for an exact result.

½ cup is how many tablespoons?

Exactly 8 tablespoons, or 24 teaspoons, or 4 fluid ounces.

How many tablespoons are in ⅔ cup?

10⅔ tablespoons — measure as 10 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons.

6 tablespoons equals how many cups?

⅜ of a cup, or 0.375 cups. In practice, measure ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons.

How many grams are in ½ cup?

100 g of granulated sugar, 60 g of all-purpose flour, 113 g of butter, or 118 g of water. The ingredient decides.

What is 115 grams in cups?

For butter, almost exactly ½ cup (one stick). For all-purpose flour, 0.96 cups. For granulated sugar, a little over ½ cup.

Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?

No. A US cup is 236.6 ml and a metric cup is 250 ml, a 5.7% difference. Australian, New Zealand and most European measuring cups are metric.

Other units

Teaspoons, ounces, gallons and the international differences.

How many tablespoons are in a gallon?

256 in a US gallon, which is 16 cups or 768 teaspoons. A UK imperial gallon holds about 307 US tablespoons.

How many teaspoons are in ½ cup?

24 teaspoons, since a full US cup holds 48.

How many teaspoons are in ⅔ cup?

32 teaspoons — one of the few cup fractions that gives a whole number.

1 tablespoon equals how many ounces?

Half a fluid ounce by volume. By weight it depends on the ingredient: a tablespoon of butter is about 0.5 oz, of sugar about 0.44 oz.

What is 130 g in ounces?

About 4.59 ounces. Divide grams by 28.35 to convert.

How many teaspoons is 5 grams?

About 1.2 teaspoons of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of water, or 1.7 teaspoons of flour. This one does depend on the ingredient.

What does tsp mean?

Teaspoon. Tbsp means tablespoon, and one tablespoon equals three teaspoons. Some recipes write a capital T for tablespoon and a lowercase t for teaspoon, which is easy to misread.

Is an Australian tablespoon different?

Yes, and significantly. The Australian tablespoon is 20 ml against 15 ml everywhere else — 4 teaspoons rather than 3. Recipes converted with the wrong spoon standard come out a third off on every spoon measurement.

About this calculator

How it works, where the numbers come from, and what we do with your data.

Is this calculator free?

Yes, entirely, with no account and no limit on conversions. The maths runs in your browser, so there is no server cost to recover.

Do you store what I convert?

No. The calculation happens on your device and nothing is transmitted. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the calculator will keep working.

Where do your reference values come from?

Each ingredient has one anchor figure — its weight in grams per US cup — averaged from the values published by major recipe-testing kitchens. Every other unit is derived from that number, so the calculators and charts can never disagree with each other.

Can I use an ingredient that isn't listed?

Yes. Choose "custom density" and enter the grams-per-cup figure from the packaging or your own weighing. The calculator handles the rest.

How accurate are these conversions?

Within a percent or two, which is comfortably inside the tolerance of any home recipe. Brand, humidity and storage all move the real weight slightly. For anything requiring genuine precision, use a scale.
